With Breathware, you can become aware of how your breath changes. The app measures breath rate through a sensor that you wear at your waist and sends the data to your phone. The point is not to force you to breathe in a particular way, though. Neema Moraveji, co-founder of Breathware and director of Stanford’s Calming Technology Lab, says “there is no universally good way to breathe.” Instead, the app allows you to know how you’re breathing. And that can affect your thinking. Smooth, deep breathing is related to smooth, deep thinking. “The breath is mirroring the thought pattern,” says Moraveji.
