The Best and Worst Hair Moments of 2020
Top 3 Hair Yays
1. The House of Representatives Passed the CROWN Act
By far our favorite hair moment of 2020 was back in September when the House of Representatives passed the CROWN Act and sent it along to the Senate. The CROWN Act campaign is led by the CROWN Coalition, founded by Dove, to create a law that prohibits race-related hair discrimination. Having this bill passed by the House of Representatives gets us one step closer to making hair discrimination illegal in all 50 states!
2. Everyone Focused on Hair Care
As many people stayed at home and social distancing for most of the year, the desire to style hair pretty much disappeared. That being said, many took advantage of this time away from the public eye to give their strands a much-needed reset. Instead of going all-in with hot tools and over-styling, hair care and air-drying became the new fad. Some of our favorite products to use were hair oils, leave-in conditioners, and masks. Everyone had plenty of time to let nourishing ingredients soak in their hair, and it shows! Here are some of our faves from 2020: Hair oil for frizzy hair: Nexxus Clean & Pure Nourishing Detox 5-in-1 Invisible Hair Oil Oil-based leave-in for natural hair: SheaMoisture 100% Virgin Coconut Oil Daily Hydration Leave-In Treatment Hair mask for dry strands: Bed Head by TIGI Recovery Treatment Mask Hair mask for natural hair: Dove Amplified Textures Moisture Spa Recovery Mask
3. Hair Accessories Took Center Stage
One of our favorite hair moments of 2020 was seeing all of the amazing and bold hair accessories. From blinged-out hair clips to bold headbands and industrial-inspired chains and rings, this was definitely the year of the statement hair accessory. This is a trend we can’t wait to continue in 2021.
Top 3 Hair Nays:
1. Many Attempted Cutting Bangs at Home
Practicing social distancing became an issue when everyone got the itch for a major hairstyle change. Many attempted the twist and cut technique that went viral on social media to create a fashionable bang style. Unfortunately, many fell victim to having no idea what they were doing and ended up with some pretty uneven and cringe-worthy bangs. We hope by now these fails are on their way to growing out!
2. At-Home Bleaching
Along with attempting haircuts at home, bleaching to achieve the ultimate E-Girl look, like the one above, became a trend. Sadly, not everyone fully understood the potential risks of bleaching alone. For those who left the bleach on for too long, breakage and extreme damage were inevitable—and many of these fails were caught on video! Lesson learned: leave this to the pros! For those who bleached their hair at home or a salon, we highly recommend a hair mask for colored strands. Our fave this year was Nexxus Color Assure Long Lasting Vibrancy Deep Moisture Masque.
3. Scalp Popping
By far one of the most disturbing hair trends that blew up on TikTok was scalp popping. Scalp popping involves pulling on a section of hair hard and fast, thus allowing you to “pop” your scalp and relieve tension and headaches. While this technique sounds satisfying, it really shouldn’t be attempted as it can cause you to tear skin tissue and even lose chunks of hair! Thanks for joining us as we relived the best and worst hair moments of 2020. While getting through this year is truly something to be proud of, we must admit we are happy to ring in 2021!
